A heavy cotton work jacket from mid-20th century Japan identifies the wearer as employee number four in Mr. Ebihara's shop in Aoyama. Worn by workers in even the smallest establishments, jackets such as this one were handmade and paste resist dyed. A Japanese silk summer-weight hitoe obi has impressionistic designs of graceful dancers and tori gates in cooling shades of silver on a purple background. This woven silk kimono belt is unlined and constructed of one layer of fabric, unlike the more formal maru and fukuro obi. A gift cloth with a pert pair of Mandarin ducks from mid 20th century Japan demonstrates the great care given to small things by the Japanese. The simple scene, created with a resist dye technique called katazome, required several hand applications of rice paste and repeated immersions in dye vats. After the outline of the ducks was drawn and filled with resist paste, dyeing built the scene up by steps from the basic shape, adding black detail, then blue detail.
