$280

This charming Chinese folk painting of embroidered felt liners for shoes comes from a rural area in the north of Shaanxi Province. It was painted by a peasant woman who used for her subject the embroidery she was doing for her children, and so merges the centuries-old folk tradition of needlework with the later artistic expression of paint on paper. The Luochuan painting community was among more than 50 such groups that began emerging in China in the late 1950s. (See "The Best of Modern Chi ...click for details

A silver bracelet from Java is formed by a sinuous coiling snake with over-sized eyes staring out at the curious world. Whimsy merges with realism as incised scales on the coil change into scrolling, a flower, then back to scales. The out-stretched head with its bug eyes appears to be searching for a friend rather than a victim. This bracelet can be worn several ways: on the wrist, pushed up toward the elbow or around the upper arm in Cleopatra fashion. We purchased this piece in the mid-1990s i ...click for details

A carved vase of hardwood native to Uzbekistan shows the strong relationship in aesthetics between Middle Eastern Persian or Iranian design and that of the Uzbeks of Central Asia. This piece is the product of an Uzbek family woodcarving business run by the family matriarch, herself a second generation woodcarver. Although the business mainly produces large ornately carved furniture for the local market in Uzbekistan, family members take great delight in creating small, carefully carved, time-con ...click for details

In a folk painting from a rural painting community in Huxian County, Shaanxi Province, a herd of fluffy longhorn sheep are brought down a mountain path by a young boy and girl. The painter, in an inspired flight of fancy, adorned the sides of the sheep with colorful circular designs of pinwheels, flowers and stars. Gouache on paper, the piece is unsigned as was generally the case for art from China's peasant painting communities. Huxian was the site of the first such community, established i ...click for details

Celadon ceramics, usually thought of as green, are produced in Thailand in this gorgeous shade of blue as well as in many shades of green. The term "celadon" refers to the fine crackles on the surface of ceramics rather than color, and for this vase Thai potters combined cobalt with traditional celadon firing techniques for a stunning result. A lotus leaf pattern encircles the shoulder, and a broad band of loosely sketched flowers decorates the mid-section. The base is signed by the po ...click for details

A colorful and joyous folk painting from rural Huxian County in Shaanxi Province, China, shows seven young girls carrying baskets overflowing with pomegranates through an orchard. The girls, accompanied by birds, weave among low, fruit-laden trees. Done in gouache on paper, the charming, simple scene is a peasant painter's interpretation of a bountiful harvest day, and employs a once-favorite rural symbol, the multi-seeded pomegranate that represented the hope for numerous offspring. These three handsome wool pillow covers were woven by hand in the remote area of Chirokchi in the Kashkadarya Region of Uzbekistan, Central Asia. Made for the local market, the covers follow a design handed down for generations. They are as thick and tightly woven as flat-weave rugs, and most likely will last for generations. There was hope among the women home weavers of Chirokchi back in the mid 1990s that their weaving could be developed into export items but, as far as we know, their dream h ...click for details

A Chinese folk painting from a rural community in Shaanxi Province celebrates the beauty of pink lotus plants blooming in a pond. The lotus, emblem of purity and perfection, is highly regarded in China, where every part of the plant has a use--as food, medicine or cosmetics. Chinese artists often depicted the lotus along with ducks, as in this painting where the lotus plants are oversized in relation to the black ducks swimming in a stream through the stems. Two seals at the top left of the pain ...click for details

A Rajasthani botanical miniature on handmade paper by Bikaner artist Raju Swami is green and gold with deep gold flowers shading to orange/red. An exotic white butterfly hovers over the meticulously veined flowers. Bikaner, a remote walled desert town in western India, has a miniaturist tradition in both Mughal and Rajasthani styles. This artist, who grinds his own mineral colors and makes his own brushes that sometimes consist of only a few squirrel hairs, produces particularly fine botanicals. ...click for details
