Three boats rendered in gold leaf sailing on a deep blue sea give this early 20th century Turkish miniature its appeal. The sea scene is done on an old manuscript page and is given more interest with the addition of notations jotted at random around the perimeter of the miniature. Waves are suggested by silver lines done in a series of half circles on a deep blue background. Clouds are formed from loose half circles of gold on a darker blue sky. Edges of the margins on the manuscript page show f ...click for details

Noah and his ark are shown in this mid-20th century Turkish miniature that was painted on a page taken from a 19th century Islamic manuscript. Noah, a revered Muslim prophet, was a favorite subject of Turkish miniaturists. The ark, as imagined by these painters, was often a fanciful vessel. Here it is a bowl-shaped boat with a gold animal that perhaps represented a sea creature serving as the bow and a curved gold tail jutting from the stern. Noah is alone with his animals, and two of them, the ...click for details

Three fish made of 47 tiles of lazurite (lapis lazuli) form this unusual necklace from Turkmenistan. The brilliant blue lapis used in this piece most likely was mined in neighboring Afghanistan, one of the world's main sources of lazurite. Lapis tiles forming the fish are unpolished and scored on each side with fine lines to represent the shimmer of fish in the water. Each tile has two horizontal internal holes to allow the piece to be double strung. Small lapis beads cover the string betwe ...click for details

Gold leaf applied to a late 18th century manuscript page creates the background for this Turkish miniature depicting seven brightly garbed horsemen in a polo match. Strong color is used for the players' costumes and flowers on the field. This work was done in the mid 20th century using the type of old paper favored by many miniaturists. The painting is in excellent condition; the paper, while it shows its age and has been mended on the edge, is quite strong. Dimensions: height: 12" (30 ...click for details

A fanciful gold leaf ark with private port holes for the animals is portrayed in this mid-20th century Turkish miniature painted on a page from a 19th century Islamic manuscript. Noah, a revered Muslim prophet, was a favorite subject of Muslim miniaturists. He often is pictured with the expression he shows in this piece--bored nonchalance--while surrounded by a lively scene of workers, waves and animals. This miniature provides the prophet with an especially imaginative ark shaped like a composi ...click for details

Each tribe of the Turkomen people developed its own distinctive designs for the heavy silver jewelry worn by most of the Central Asian nomadic groups. This heart-shaped piece, from the Teke subtribe, was an important part of their culture. Called an asyk, the gilded and incised heart was presented to a bride by the groom's parents. She wore it on the back of her head or on a braid throughout most of her life, taking it off, along with her other silver jewelry, when she became an elderly matr ...click for details

The graceful abstract shape of this silver pendant from the nomadic Turkomen (Turkmen) who roamed across Central Asia suggests a bird in flight. Incised patterns on the silver are gilded and the piece is set with four cabochon cornelians. Seven small embossed tear-shaped pendants on chains give movement to the highly stylized bird. The ornament is typical of the Teke tribe and dates to the early 20th century. Extra importance and dimension are given to this piece through the artisan's use of ...click for details

Painted around 1830 by Persian miniaturist Riza-Zade, this is a delightful figure of a grand Ottoman gentleman. Riza-Zade painted this work in Istanbul, where he was a member of the court of Sultan Mahmud II. It was a common practice of the Ottoman sultans to bring artisans, particularly miniaturists, from Persia to serve the court's needs. The painting is signed in the lower right quadrant. The subject, most likely a vizier, has an exceptionally sensitive face and elegant stance. His green b ...click for details

Bearing a Russian production date seal of 1904, this samovar was found in the Republic of Georgia, once part of the former USSR. Numerous other stamps on the vessel attest to the fame and awards accorded its Russian maker. Georgians, who were under Russian rule for 70 years, followed many Russian practices, among them the customs surrounding tea drinking. After their country became independent, they sold off many of their Russian possessions. The tray and bowl are silver plated; the samovar itse ...click for details
